S3 — Student Research Symposium

TYPOGRAPHY • ILLUSTRATION • POSTER DESIGN

The SDSU Student Symposium also known as S3 asked our class to create numerous deliverables that would be used as advertisements, call to action, and display for the Student Symposium occurring in the Spring of 2025. The client wanted applicants and attendees to know that the event was more than an exhibition of STEM research projects and encouraged applicants from all disciplines.

DESIGN BRIEF

The purpose of the ribbon illustration that is shown amongst all 3 posters is an interpretation of combining art and research. Pulling inspiration from multiple disciplines and looking at images of sound waves, neuron synapses, and even analytics, they all created interesting patterns across a page. Rather than creating a direct illustration of the found inspiration, the ribbon illustration was created. To create more depth and dimension, the ribbon intertwines each character, making the headline pop. Incorporated into the illustration was a gradient effect of SDSU’s brand colors to identify its affiliation with the school. Using the three description words S3 has given themselves, discovery, creativity, and innovation, the words are individually displayed on each poster. When placed together they can successfully work as a unit but, when alone they are still identifiable to one another and S3.
